Please explain why there is even such a thing as a surcharge. How do insurance companies get away with applying surcharges to policy holders when the policy holder is an accident. Why is there a surcharge or an increase in your premium when you have an accident? Isn’t that the purpose of the premiums you have been paying all along for? Insurance companies like to take your money but as soon as you submit a claim, they hit you with surcharges and higher rates. How and why are they allowed to get away with this? Please explain, because I don’t get it.

Is there any benefit to being a long term customer of a particular insurance company? My agent encourages me not to change carriers, although I can find cheaper rates elsewhere, because I have been with my current carrier for 15 years. He says that when/if I need to make claims I will not be hassled as much and my rates should not go up. Do insurance companies care how long you have been a customer? Don’t they all have a standard policy regarding rate increases or canceling customer completely regardless of how long you’ve been a customer? Is my agent just trying to keep his pockets full?

If one vehicle is insured by two separate policies, by two separate drivers, and one driver gets into an accident, will there be a problem with coverage of the vehicle? I am insured by PGAC and my mom by Mercury. Mercury told my mother that if I were to be in an accident there would be a problem with me being covered. How can that be if I have my own policy?
